NOTAS PARA JULIE
PRODUTORA INFINITY
COLOR GRADING FOR SHORT FILM.
SÃO PAULO - BRAZIL
The short film "Notas Para Julie" was set with shots in various scenarios, lighting conditions, and different concepts, posing a significant challenge for post-production. Each scene was filmed under different lighting conditions, resulting in variations in color and contrast. Maintaining visual consistency throughout the short film was crucial to avoid distractions for the viewer. One of the challenges was harmonizing these elements for a cohesive visual experience, especially since many scenes had high levels of brightness. Therefore, the transition between scenes shot in outdoor and indoor environments required special adjustments, such as light equalization, to maintain a narrative rhythm.
FLASHBACK SCENES
Orange tones and the use of the Black Pro Mist (BPM) technique in a flashback scene significantly contributed to atmosphere construction and temporal differentiation. The orange hue often evokes a sense of nostalgia and warmth. By employing this predominant color, we can establish an immediate visual association with the past, suggesting a distant and sentimental memory. The "Black Pro Mist" technique created a more diffuse and ethereal appearance. This visually distinguishes the flashback from the rest of the short film, providing a dreamlike or reminiscent sensation.
The flashback scene was inspired by the 2017 animated film "Coco."
COLOR GRADING
The use of high contrasts and shadows tinted towards green was a stylistic choice to portray profound sadness in various ways. Green is often associated with feelings like melancholy and sorrow, and by employing shadows tinted towards green, we can create a color palette that suggests despair, loneliness, or a denser atmosphere. In the post-funeral scene of "Notas Para Julie" the protagonist returns home under the late afternoon sun's last rays. The strategic visual approach involves desaturating the orange hues of the sun, resulting in more pastel and less vibrant tones. This stylistic choice aims to visually represent sadness, expressing deep emotions through the absence of vibrant colors.
"Dedicated to all those who are passionate about something to the point of giving up everything for a dream."
